Genomic Characterization of the Three Balkan Livestock Guardian Dogs

نویسندگان

چکیده

Balkan Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGD) were bred to help protect sheep flocks in sparsely populated, remote mountainous areas the Balkans. The aim of this study was genomic characterization (107,403 autosomal SNPs) three LGD breeds from Balkans (Karst Shepherd, Sharplanina Dog, and Tornjak). Our analyses performed on 44 dogs representing breeds, as well 79 publicly available genotypes eight other 70 individuals seven popular 18 gray wolves. results multivariate, phylogenetic, clustering (STRUCTURE), FST differentiation showed that are genetically distinct populations. While Dog Tornjak closely related Karst Shepherd is a slightly population with estimated influence German Shepard (Treemix analysis). Estimated diversity high low inbreeding (Ho = 0.315, He FROH>2Mb 0.020) 0.301, 0.033) breeds. Low Shepherds 0.241, 0.222, 0.087), indicating need for proper management. obtained will conservation management an essential part specific grazing biocultural system its sustainable maintenance.

Where Do Livestock Guardian Dogs Go? Movement Patterns of Free-Ranging Maremma Sheepdogs

In many parts of the world, livestock guardian dogs (LGDs) are a relatively new and increasingly popular method for controlling the impact of wild predators on livestock. On large grazing properties in Australia, LGDs are often allowed to range freely over large areas, with minimal supervision by their owners. How they behave in this situation is mostly unknown. We fitted free-ranging Maremma s...

Livestock guardian dogs as surrogate top predators? How Maremma sheepdogs affect a wildlife community

Use of livestock guardian dogs (LGDs) to reduce predation on livestock is increasing. However, how these dogs influence the activity of wildlife, including predators, is not well understood. We used pellet counts and remote cameras to investigate the effects of free ranging LGDs on four large herbivores (eastern gray kangaroo, common wombat, swamp wallaby, and sambar deer) and one mesopredator ...
